Leader Dog for the Blind is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1939 by a group of Lions from the Uptown Lions Club of Detroit that recognized a need for a fellow lion who had lost his vision and wanted a seeing eye dog. They purchased an old farm outside of Detroit which has since grew to be 14-acres.
The organization focuses on training Seeing Eye Dogs from the puppy stage to be paired at NO COST to a person in need of a Seeing Eye Dog. They organization has strict standards on how the puppies are raised, what tests they must pass, etc.... They pay for all of this, plus they continue to pay for food and such for the life of that service animal.
Puppies are placed with volunteer families whos job it is to raise these puppies and train them into seeing eye dogs before they are placed. Sheri Perkowitz from the Grayslake Lions Club has been a long time trainer and advocate for the organization and is our Presenter for this month.
PLEASE COME OUT AND HEAR HER STORY!
